The Packhorse Bridge was built in 1675 close to the ford which crossed the river Wharfe on the Roman road to Boroughbridge. This crossing of the river Wharfe was of such military importance to the Romans that they built the fort of Olicana, which stood on the site of the present All Saints Parish Church.
