The Town Hall - Keighley

The opening of the Bingley to Skipton section of the Leeds Liverpool Canal brought improved transportation links to Keighley. By 1780 Keighley had the first cotton mill in Yorkshire. Road communications were opened in 1814 with the new Bradford to Keighley turnpike which carried horse drawn gigs transporting mail to Leeds, Colne, Skipton and Bradford. Through the 19th century Keighley grew rapidly with the woollen mills taking over from cotton. It was the water wheels of the rivers Worth and North Beck that powered the looms.
