The Hewenden viaduct is one of the tallest in Britain. Constructed in 1884, the structure stands 123 ft high with 17 arches spanning 376 yards across. Shifting sands forced the builders to dig the foundations far deeper than anticipated - it was reputed that the arches stood as deep in the ground as they did above ground. The viaduct has been disused since 1964 and despite various attempts to keep it open to the public it was sold by British Rail to a private owner for £1.00. |
