Until the pack-horse bridge was built, crossing Howden Beck could only be done via the ford shown on the right of the painting. The pack-horse bridge was constructed in 1723. It is of hammer-dressed stone, forming a single segmental arch. The Parish Constable's Account for January 7, 1723 records the payment of £10 to Benja. Craven and Josa Scott, masons 'for building a Stone Bridge over Howden Beck at Beckfoot.' The wooden railings were added later. |
