Bolton Abbey Across the River Wharfe
Bolton Abbey

Bolton means “an enclosure with a house” and originally referred to the manor house of Edwin a Saxon earl. Later a religious house or Priory was established on the site. Bolton Priory dates back to the 12th century and was the home of The Black Cannons of the order of Saint Agustine. In the early 1700s Bolton Abbey estates passed by marriage, into the hands of the Cavendish family.
